We are rebranding from The Brynafon Country House Hotel to Brynafon Hotel Wales. The ‘country house’ element of the name was inherited from previous owners who presumably wished to distance themselves from the historic routes of the building and at the same time introduce an assumed gentrification.
We have come to feel that the name is misleading and wish the hotel to be reconnected with its important social heritage. We see ourselves as custodians of a small unusual Hotel in a beautiful building that is set in a breathtaking country location. Part of the rebranding will be to build a new visitors centre explaining about workhouses and places of historic interest in the area together with the re-launch of the restaurant to ‘Simply Welsh’ serving excellent seasonal and locally sourced produce and of course providing good quality accommodation.
The Brynafon Hotel Wales building has taken on a number of uses over its 150 and more years from when it was built as a workhouse in 1870 as part of the welfare reforms under Welshman David Lloyd George. After the closure of the workhouse in the late 1930's it has since been used by the Royal School for the Deaf, as a wartime evacuee house, a factory, and a local fire-drill site. In 1989, after about 30 years of dereliction, it was converted into self contained accommodation, and finally a hotel.
We hope that the workhouse elements whilst recognised for its part in the history of British society will not overshadow the current (and ongoing) modernisation, comfort and beauty that exist here today. And the fact that Brynafon is a beautiful country hotel in Wales.
With so many alterations and such a history it is hardly surprising that no two rooms are the same! If you are looking for something a bit beyond the cookie cutter holiday hotel approach, with charm and personality and above all warmth then Brynafon is a great option for short break accommodation. There is a wealth of things to do and see in the area and is truly a nature lovers paradise! With numerous nature reserves, the area has attracted its fair share of national attention through Countryfile and Springwatch as well as local attention in the guise of Weatherman Walking.
